Examine Our Heart– Where Our Treasure Is

October 12th, 2009

Life is like a drama series – different snippets of joy and sorrow, victories and challenges, gain and loss at different season of life. Each drama series have an ending, and I believe this we can influence for our own lives. We can’t change the events, but we can decide our attitude and actions.

A few events have occurred in my life and people around me that makes me wonder about our priorities in life. I am also in a phase of life where I am in a cross junction, deciding the next step.

The last 2 years, by God’s grace I successfully passed all 3 parts of my postgraduate exams. To a lot of people of my same profession – medicine, this is a great achievement and a significant milestone for our career path. Somehow I did not feel that great joy and happiness that I thought I would. I realised career achievement and success is not important to me.

Few weeks ago, I joined my church group to run a medical camp in a rural village in western Nepal. It opened my eyes to the realities of poverty that third world countries are facing. At the same time, I saw that these people are so simple, their goals of the day is to have adequate food, shelter and health – the essential necessity of life. Whereas for us urban people, our goal is to have a more comfortable, and even maybe a more luxurious lifestyle. And honestly I really struggled to adjust to the living condition there for that limited few days.

Just a few days back, my car was just stolen, and mind you, this occurred in Singapore, not Johor ;) . I was shocked that this happened to me, but I did not grieve over the car loss as I told myself it is just a car, not a close family member. I was reminded of Matthew 6:19-21, where Jesus urged us to store for ourselves treasures in heaven where it can’t be stolen, and he said ‘For where your treasure is, your heart will be also’. Where is my treasure? What is my priority in life now? What have I been spending most of my time doing?

OCF 50th anniversary convention focus is timely, for me and for you as well, to take stock of our lives – our priorities in life. Restoring vision, renewing hope. We hope to see every OCF alumni recapturing the essence of the life God has called us to live, to have our vision fixed on Him and living our maximum potential in the Kingdom of God on earth, fulfilling His call to discipleship and making disciples.

Obviously my desire is to see all of you in this year’s convention in Malacca, 9-13 December 2009, as I believe God has something in store for everyone who is coming with an open heart to receive His Word. But regardless whether you are able to join the convention, my urge to each of you and even myself, is to really examine our own hearts and ask ourselves, ‘Are we living for God every day?’ I don’t want to get carried away with the less essential demands of life. It is not worth it.

Personal Letter From Auntie Merrilyn

September 13th, 2009

Dear Friends of Overseas Christian Fellowship,

“GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS  O GOD MY FATHER”

OCF. Australia is preparing to celebrate 50 years of God’s Faithfulness to us as a Christian student-body on UAuntie Merrilynniversity campuses, where we have been meeting on Friday nights, in the Name of Jesus, primarily to study the Word of God.   So, a Convention has been planned for several years, to be held where we can all gather around God’s Word, especially giving thanks to the Lord, for His amazing Grace extended to all of we OCF’ers.

  • Bookings have been made in the Equatorial Hotel in Malacca, Malaysia, for us all to be together
  • Meetings are planned from Wednesday 9th until Sunday 13th  December, 2009
  • The theme is 1 Peter 1:3 “to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”
  • Our guest speakers are two former OCF. Leaders, Dr. Calvin Ma (Sydney)and Pastor Chris Chia (Singapore)
  • In the afternoons, we have planned a variety of Forums to be conducted by former OCF Leaders.
  • Opportunity will be given to those who have been on Mission, to share the nations they have reached
  • All your meals will be provided by the Equatorial Hotel, allowing us quality time for reunion meals together
  • There will be sufficient time during the day for you to meet up with your “old mates” and go down memory lane together
  • Malacca is just across the border from Singapore and just a few hours bus journey from Subang Jaya in Malaysia
  • It is not too late for you to register for our 50th OCF Convention, just e:mail :   convention2009@ocfaustralia.org

In Australia, we have sacrificed our annual Convention, in order to give opportunity to Returnees all around S.E. Asia and beyond, to make it more convenient for them to fly into Singapore or Malaysia, that this Reunion will be significant both as an offering of thanksgiving to the Lord and to re-dedicate our lives to Him that as His servants, we all may be fulfilling the Great Commission of Christ and doing what He has told us to do!

Therefore, for OCF students in Australia, who will be returning home for the Christmas vacation, it is not too late to plan your return flight to go through MALACCA, Malaysia, to both receive from the Lord and learn from Returnee OCF’ers, how to leave a mark for Jesus, on your community!

Personally, I look forward greatly to being at our 50th OCF Convention down in Malacca.   I had the joy and privilege of attending our 40th OCF Convention in Malacca, ten years ago, where we were all humbled to see what the Lord has done through OCF Australia, as a University campus student ministry.   There was much praise and worship to the Lord, who established OCF. Australia.   There were old friends to be reunited with.

There were new friends to meet.  Some even brought their wife and four children for his friends to meet.  Even some parents came to meet the people who had affected their children for life.  There was laughter, as we rejoiced in God’s amazing ways.   Likewise, there were tears as we were reminded of difficulties and trials some had faced in their lives.  We were all there to encourage one another;  to learn from each other;  to pray for each other and  being challenged for short-term mission too.  In it all we were humbled to see what the Lord had continued to do through us all and were greatly inspired to get ready to face the 21st Century as His servant.   Now, we are nearly ten years into this Century and the battle-cry has been heard and we need to be alert and “sharpen our swords” and be ready for the Lord’s command.  See you there!

Lovingly from Merrilyn Teague
